Understanding The Ulcer

The wounded healer to the rescue. There's too much to worry about to worry about it.

"I have leprosy, what's eating you?!" A jovial (cf. Joviality) quip about something brought under control for the most part. The lesser part, but just as distressing, is the ulcer.

U is for ulcers as corrupting or festering antagonists. An ulcerous presence is always unwelcome, but never comes inside without an invitation.

Sometimes the invite is in the form of acidic food and/or beverage, but many times in a form that cannot be easily mollified. I wouldn't lose sleep over it but many do, worrying. Let's face it, there's too much to worry about to worry about it. I prefer eating something than something eating me - from the inside no less. Have I told you how nauseous Woody Allen makes me?

Basically, I think it's just a matter of confusing happiness with survival. "I can't live without (fill in the blank)" is rarely heard only from those on life support. The paradox for most Americans is that we are getting fat micro-managing every detail of life. Perhaps 'food for thought' should be regulated as well for those who suffer with a peptic ulcer.

In any case, the concern over worry and ultimately any corrupting or festering sore is met by avoidance. Henri Nouwen in Work Around Your Abyss suggests that we avoid two extremes: "being completely absorbed in your pain" or worry, "and being distracted by so many things that you stay away from the wound you want to heal." Better, I would think, than eating antacid tabs like candy and effectively putting a plug in it.
