A couple years ago, I was lucky enough to meet Chelsea Allen at MilkBoy Ardmore. She has a quiet demeanor, but you’d never know it if you saw her perform before you met her. In this Week’s Solo Artist Spotlight I will give you some more info on Chelsea Sue Allen.

Some of you may know Chelsea, a member of Vilebred, as the lady behind the keyboard with the amazing voice. Others may know her from her solo work. Either way, if you’ve heard her before, I’m sure you’re a fan. I know I am.

At first, you will be entranced by the melodic tones of her voice. After that, you will slowly start to pick up the extremely high quality of her songwriting. There are very few more well-rounded singer/songwriters performing in Delco right now.

In preparation for this Spotlight, I took the time to re-listen to her newest release, “Tiny Prizes.” What a great album! I have had it for a few weeks and I’ve been listening to it here and there. I had loved what I heard, but upon closer scrutiny, I find it both musically and lyrically flawless.

Chelsea has been making a lot of noise lately, and I’m not the only local journalist that took notice:

“In a little more than a year, Allen has established herself as a fresh new voice on the music scene. Her self-produced debut album “Tiny Prizes,” released in December, is a true revelation. The 11 songs straddle numerous genres while immersing the listener in a lush, moody atmosphere, while Allen’s narrative lyrics paint ambient landscapes in songs that often eschew the traditional musical conventions of rhyme and cadence. Instead, Allen and her music take their time to properly tell their stories to their conclusion. The result is a sound that is as distinctive as it is captivating.”-Montgomery Media

“You could label the delicate, dreamy songs of multi-instrumentalist Chelsea Sue Allen “chamber pop” and you wouldn’t be wrong, exactly. But there’s far more to the Downingtown singer-songwriter’s method, as shown on her sensational new album, Tiny Prizes.” -Philly.com

Chelsea is recommended if you like Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, Grizzly Bear, Neil Young, Beach House, Fiona Apple, The Rolling Stones and Feist. I enjoy her music immensely and guess what, she is one of those rare individuals who is just as good live as she is in the studio!

She has a bunch of killer gigs scheduled for the next few months, I will keep you posted as they get closer! Don’t forget to pick up a copy of, “Tiny Prizes” for yourself at the show!
