Cougars Post Another Shutout
Springfield varsity boys' soccer team won 1-0 against Upper Darby.

The Springfield boys’ soccer team strikes first again. In a Central League matchup against Upper Darby, senior Zac Furia scored in the 18th minute of the first half. From then on, the Cougars didn’t look in the rearview mirror.
“We always go for the shutout first,” said head coach Jason Piombino. “We make good on the chances that we get. We had a set piece goal again today.”
The Cougars posted another shutout, which has become a reoccurring team for the defensive unit.

“If you can get after the other team early and score a goal it helps,” said Piombino. “We are really tough to come back on when we have a lead. We want to get after you and lock it down a little more.”
In the second half, Springfield played tough defense as Upper Darby had numerous chances to score. Junior goalie Dave Sousa anchored the defense and finished the contest with four saves. Sousa needed to buckle down during the last few minutes of the game as Upper Darby came roaring back with many offensive opportunities.

The Cougars kept their cool, though.
“It was a little hectic,” said Piombino. “We had quite a few of those games this season. We have good goalkeeping and the defense is solid.”
