DARBY, PA – Smoke from the fire at a Southwest Philadelphia recycling center made its way into nearby Delaware County, forcing an elementary school to evacuate Thursday afternoon.

Students at Colwyn Elementary School in Darby complained when smoke smells wafted over to the William Penn School District school Thursday morning after the fire broke out at about 9:44 a.m. at Pasco Inc. in Southwest Philadelphia.

Initially, the students who complained of the smoke were cleared by EMTs. Fire officials also inspected the building and declared it safe for students and staff after the school district’s maintenance personnel took steps to address the smell, according to the district.
