Don't Leave Your Car Unlocked

Theft from unlocked vehicles has risen this summer in Springfield.


There have been many thefts of merchandise from unlocked vehicles reported in Springfield this summer.

In early August, t, several locked cars were forcibly entered at and the GPSs and radios taken. Several vehicles were also broken into at the parking lot and valuables stolen,

"This type of crime is most prevalent in summer months," said Sgt. Joseph Sadoff of "There has also been an increase in these type of incidents over the last few years."

Theft: Locked vs Unlocked

Incidents of locked cars that are broken into are more rare and typically occur during the day in the parking lots of busy shopping centers and business districts, according to Springfield Police.

The majority of thefts take place from unlocked cars. These crimes normally take place during the night from vehicles parked on the street or in driveways, says police.

Springfield Police Department's Tips for Preventing Theft

  1. Lock the doors of your vehicle at all times
  2. Remove any valuables from your car such as a wallet, cell phone, laptop, etc.
  3. Don't leave loose change or money in your vehicle
  4. Keep GPS out of view when you are not using it, if possible

If you witness suspicious activity in your neighborhood, the Springfield Police Department recommends that you dial 911.Β
