Meet Springfield Cub Scout Pack 240

You may have spotted the cub scouts and boy scouts selling popcorn around Springfield. Find out how they have been contributing to the community since 1957.

Springfield Cub Scout Pack 240 started on March 1, 1957 and is the oldest cub scout pack in the area.

The pack is led by Nick Meloni who became involved when his son, who is currently in seventh grade, was in first grade. In addition to being cub master of Pack 240, Meloni is assistant scout master for Boy Scout Troop 512.

Boys in first through fifth grades can become cub scouts. There are currently 65 boys in Springfield Cub Scout Pack 240. Each grade has its own den which meets twice a month. Once a month the entire pack gets together for a food drive, bowling, camping, or a traditional pack meeting.

Pack 240 is getting ready for their fall camping trip to Broad Creek Scout Reservation in Maryland.

Leadership and Decision Making

Every fall and spring Pack 240 has a camping trip. There is also an annual sleepover at Adventure Aquarium, The Philadelphia Zoo, Battleship New Jersey, or The Franklin Institute

"The boys choose where to have the sleepover," said Meloni. "We empower them to make decisions on their own and as a group. The cubs get more involved in decision making as they get older."

From Cub Scout to Boy Scout

"This cub scout pack is very successful at transitioning cub scouts to boy scouts," said Meloni. "I am very proud of how many cub scouts graduate to boy scouts. This year all 15, fifth grade boys will move on to boy scouts."

This December the fifth grade cub scouts will earn their Arrow of Light badge. The Arrow of Light is the only cub scout badge that a boy scout can wear on their uniform.

Popcorn Fundraiser

The cub scouts and boy scouts are currently busy selling popcorn in and around Springfield to fund their activities.

In November, the scouts lead the 6 ABC food drive. Last year they collected over 15,000 cans. In winter they also participate in the Souper Bowl food drive to help the less fortunate.

Cub Scout Pledge

Each cub scout pledges to "do their duty for God and their country, to help other people, and to obey the law of the pack."

As part of that pledge, Pack 240 works to make Springfield and the surrounding area a better place to live. In addition to their food drives, they clean up creeks in the area.

"Pack 240 works with Troop 512 each Memorial Day weekend to replace tattered American flags on the graves of veterans at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery," said Meloni.
