Springfield Field Hockey Team Defeats Lower Merion

After a disappointing first half, Springfield's offense exploded for three unanswered goals to win, 3-1.

It was a tale of two halves.

In the first half against Lower Merion Tuesday, Springfield came out flat, exhausted and sloppy.

The team couldn’t put a quality run together against a tough Lower Merion defense.

Once the Lady Cougars went into halftime down 1-0, they knew they needed to fix their mistakes quickly.

“I think we know once we are down it is never over,” said head coach Brittany Piotti. “We have been in this position so many times.”

Springfield looked like a different team in the second half scoring three unanswered goals to win, 3-1.

The Lady Cougars controlled the ball for most of the second half as Lower Merion didn’t come close to scoring.

“You have to take advantage of the opportunities when you are on attack,” said Piotti. “That is defiantly what it came down to. I think that set the mentality for the second half. When you have possession capitalize on the chances in front of the net.”

Junior forwards Stephanie Cant and Nicole Ward added the spark that Springfield needed to put the Aces away as they each finished with a goal.

“We played a game yesterday and I think we were just a little worn out,” said Pittoi.

Springfield finishes its season on the road against non-league opponent Interboro on Thursday. The team is still vying for playoff positioning.

“We are going to play our game on Thursday,” said Piotti. “We will play them tough and hopefully we will come out on top.”
