Springfield Sports Week Recap

The Springfield field hockey team looks to make a late push, as the football team dominates another opponent to stay undefeated.

With the season almost in the books, Springfield's field hockey team is still looking to make a late push in the Central League. A few games this season have resulted in a close loss, which hasn’t helped the Cougars’ chances of coming up on top in the league.

No worries, though. There is still time to make some damage.

“We would love to go out winning,” said head coach Brittany Piotti. “There really isn’t a reason why we shouldn’t be able to. The record may not show that. If you look at how we lose [games] it was by one goal. I really hope that we can step it up this week coming up.”

The Lady Cougars lost by a goal to Garnet Valley last week. A few weeks before that, they almost defeated Conestoga, but a late goal cost them.

Now with a few games left in the season, Springfield has a great opportunity to creep a few spots up in the Central League standings.

“I don’t think it is talent wise that we are getting defeated,” said Piotti. “When we make mistakes, opponents have been able to capitalize. It is always frustrating to look at your overall record and see it. We just have to finish strong the next two weeks.”

Ridley is the first test for Springfield on Tuesday, followed by another important Central League match-up against Radnor on Thursday.

“It is a big week,” said Piotti. “We are so competitive with both teams. It will be interesting to see how that pans out. It will be a fight for sure. I think our girls have a different mentality. We want to finish really strong.”

Boys’ Soccer

The Cougars shut out Upper Darby on Wednesday with a 1-0 win. Senior Zac Furia scored the only goal for Springfield.

On Friday night, the Cougars could not defeat a tough Octorara team and fell 2-0. Springfield looks to bounce back at home against Ridley on Tuesday.

Girls’ Soccer

After being shut out by Garnet Valley on Monday, the Lady Cougars came out strong against Upper Darby a few days later.

Maddie Lynch assisted Taylor Cutcliffe for the Lady Cougars’ first goal. In the 60th minute, Lauren Notorfrancesco found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

Springfield travels to Ridley on Tuesday night. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

Football

The Springfield football team continued its dominance on Thursday evening with a 49-3 victory over Radnor.

Radnor was able to get on the board in the first quarter, but couldn’t get anything offensively going the rest of the game.

Mike Dougherty had two touchdown runs. Ryan Strain threw for 152 yards.

The Cougars will take their unbeaten record to Upper Darby at 7 p.m.

Upper Darby is 1-5 this season.
