Back in 1860, Abraham Lincoln, a lawyer from Kentucky, became the 16th President of the U.S. and first Republican to win The White House. Mr. Lincoln won with only 40 percent of the popular vote by defeating three candidates according to history.com, “Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Constitutional Union candidate John Bell, and Northern Democrat Stephen Douglas, a U.S. senator for Illinois.”
Mr. Lincoln, who was known for his unique character and memorable speeches, would become one of history’s greatest American Presidents due to his preservation of the Union and bringing an end to slavery.
The “March King,” John Philip Sousa is born

Back in 1854, Washington, D.C, welcomed the birth of future prolific composer,
John Philip Sousa. Mr. Sousa was the son of a U.S. Marine Band trombonist and would later compose patriotic tunes.

According to history.com, “The instantly recognizable sound of Sousa's timeless pieces—"The Washington Post" (1889), "The Liberty Bell" (1893), and "Stars And Stripes Forever" (1896)—is permanently etched in many Americans' memory banks.”
Mr. Sousa would later serve a Marine Band apprenticeship for seven years and would be called, “The March King,” due to his 300 compositions and 136 marches.
