Soap Opera Legendry Writer, Agnes Nixon, is born

Back in 1927, Chicago, IL, welcomed the birth of future soap opera writer, Agnes Nixon.  Ms. Nixon is well-known for her work on Proctor & Gamble and Colgate-Palmolive sponsored radio programs but she led the way of becoming the a writer of soap operas that discussed social issues.

History.com acknowledged that, “According to The Soap Opera Encyclopedia, One Life to Live was “the first serial to present a vast array of ethnic types, broad comic situations, a constant emphasis on social issues, and strong male characters.” The show’s main character, Victoria Lord (played by Erica Sleazak since 1971), has suffered a long list of health problems, including cancer and dissociative identity disorder, and has also been forced to contend with such issues as divorce, rape and widowhood.”

Due to changes in society and the major interest in reality shows, Soap Opera have been getting cancelled at an alarming rate.  At this time, Ms. Nixon’s One Life to Live is her only surviving Soap Opera, but it is scheduled to shut down production in early 2012.

However, Ms. Nixon’s legacy of displaying social issues in her work will always be remembered for times to come.

Radio City Music Hall debuts

 

Back in 1932, New York City debut Radio City Music Hall, an Art Deco theater that now holds history and draws millions of guests per year.  This venue was a subject or revitalization in NYC’s “Speakeasy belt,” with the help of the 91 million in funds from billionaire, John D. Rockefeller as a help to the depression ridden area.

According to radiocity.com, “Rockefeller made a bold decision that would leave a lasting impact on the city's architectural and cultural landscape. He decided to build an entire complex of buildings on the property-buildings so superior that they would attract commercial tenants even in a depressed city flooded with vacant rental space. The project would express the highest ideals of architecture and design and stand as a symbol of optimism and hope.”

Radio City Music hall host musical acts, film viewing and of course the widely known The Rockettes, an all female dance company delivers the spectacular annual Radio City Christmas Spectacular at this facility along with tours throughout the U.S. and the world.

This historic building had a $70 million restoration and still remains its status as, “the largest indoor theater in the world.”

History.com states that, “In its first four decades, Radio City Music Hall alternated as a first-run movie theater and a site for gala stage shows. More than 700 films have premiered at Radio City Music Hall since 1933. In the late 1970s, the theater changed its format and began staging concerts by popular music artists. The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, which debuted in 1933, draws more than a million people annually. The show features the high-kicking Rockettes, a precision dance troupe that has been a staple at Radio City since the 1930s.”
