Basketball Develops the Next Generation of Leaders

While many sports offer multiple opportunities to develop today's youth, basketball is a dynamic game that teaches discipline, teamwork, situational thinking, among other skills.

Discipline

If a child wants to rise to the top, they must put in the work to succeed. Basketball is a game that requires constant repetition and improvement. From dribbling exercises to shooting, none of these skills are developed overnight. Only with a desire to develop one's skills can a child succeed.

This transfers to life skills. With the exception of luck, most children will have to put in the time to succeed with every aspect of life. They must turn weaknesses into strengths through practice. The hardwood courts provide this life simulation.

Teamwork

Basketball is won on and off the court by a cohesive effort. Plays are executed seamlessly through communication and visual cues. If one element is slightly off, the desired effect will not be achieved. Through practice simulations and games, every child will learn to work with each other's strengths and weaknesses.

When a child enters high school and college, they will learn and perform in groups. When they reach adulthood, communication and adaptability are the cornerstones of functioning in family and work worlds.

Situational Thinking

While there are set plays in basketball, children must learn to make adjustments and real-time decisions. If the opposing defense is double teaming the point guard, he/she must recognize this and make a logical decision to either pass the ball to the open player or try to dodge around the double team.

Life throws us curve balls, and we must learn to adapt to various situations. There are guidelines, but children must also recognize that logical thinking is an important part of navigating these guidelines when there isn't a set path.

Next Steps

Discipline, Teamwork, and Situational Thinking are the hallmarks of basketball and other sports. There are direct and indirect benefits of developing these skills.
