German pharmaceutical company, “Bayer” patents its aspirin

 

Back in 1899, the over the counter drug which contains, “acetylsalicylic acid, was patented under the German pharmaceutical firm as “Bayer Aspirin.”

According to history.com, “After obtaining the patent rights, Bayer began distributing aspirin in powder form to physicians to give to their patients one gram at a time. The brand name came from "a" for acetyl, "spir" from the spirea plant (a source of salicin) and the suffix "in," commonly used for medications. It quickly became the number-one drug worldwide.”

Actor, Director, Producer, Rob Reiner born

 

Back in 1947, future actor, director, producer and son of comedian Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner was born in New York City.  Mr. Reiner began his acting career after his family moved to Los Angeles.  Before earning his big break as the character, Michael “Meathead,” Stivic in “All in the Family,” in 1971, he would had appeared in community theater productions and an appearance on Alfred Hitchcock Presents. 

According to history.com, “In addition to directing and producing, Reiner maintained an acting career over the years, appearing in supporting roles in such films as Postcards from the Edge (1990), Sleepless in Seattle (1993), Bullets Over Broadway (1994), Primary Colors (1998) and The Majestic(2001). He also appeared in some of his own movies, including The Story of Us and Alex and Emma.  Reiner and his second wife, Michele, married in 1989; they have three children.” 

Reiner’s first wife was actress and director, Penny Marshall, whom he had met when he appeared on, “The Odd Couple.” 

Mr. Reiner’s most popular films in which he either acted, produced or directed include: “When Harry Met Sally,” “This is Spinal Tap,” “The Bucket List,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” and “Misery.”
