Bruce Lee and Jimi Hendrix Share a Birthday (2 Years Apart) - This Day in History – Nov 27th

Master Kung Fu Artist and Actor, Bruce Lee is born

Back in 1940, San Francisco, CA welcomed Bruce Lee, future marital arts legend.  Lee’s father was a Chinese Opera Star who toured the U.S. and would later move back to China and become a child actor who appeared in over 20 Chinese films.  Mr. Lee who was trained in dance and a Kung Fu style known as “Wing Chun Gung Fu.” 

Bruce lee would return to America in 1959 and would start a martial arts studio, get married and slowly find his way into a television program called, “The Green Hornet.”

According to history.com “In search of better acting roles than Hollywood was offering, Lee returned to Hong Kong in the early 1970s. He successfully established himself as a star in Asia with the action movies The Big Boss (1971) and The Way of the Dragon (1972), which he wrote, directed and starred in. Lee’s next film, Enter the Dragon, was released in the United States by Hollywood studio Warner Brothers in August 1973. Tragically, Lee had died one month earlier, on July 20, in Hong Kong, after suffering a brain edema believed to be caused by an adverse reaction to a pain medication. Enter the Dragon was a box-office hit, eventually grossing more than $200 million, and Lee posthumously became a movie icon in America.”

Legendary guitarist, Jimi Hendrix is born 

Back in 1942, Seattle, WA, welcomed future guitar legend, Jimi Hendrix.  Before Mr. Hendrix became a famous guitarist, he served in the Army in 1959 as a paratrooper but was honorably discharged in 1961 due to an injury that would later exempt him from duty in the Vietnam War.  Influenced by the likes of music greats Muddy Waters, Hendrix renewed his guitar training to work as a pickup guitarist and backup musician with fellow artists Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, B.B. King and Little Richard.  Bassist Ryan Chandler of the British group the Animals heard Hendrix play and became his manager of the guitarist the, “Jimi Hendrix Experience,” along with drummer Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding.

According to history.com, “Hendrix, one of the most innovative guitar players of the rock era, established an advanced recording studio in New York called the Electric Lady, boasting 46-track recording technology. The studio opened in August 1970, shortly before Hendrix died in London in September 1970, following a drug overdose. He was 27.”
