Back on this day in 1886, an earthquake near Charleston, SC received a strong earthquake around 9:51 pm. This event developed into a 7.6 magnitude Earthquake that killed 100 people and destroyed hundreds of buildings in this area.

Brooklyn Dodger, Koufax sets new strikeout record
Sanford “Sandy” Koufax, the pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers strikes out 18 batters, a new National League record back in 1969. The left hander was facing his team’s rivals, the San Francisco Giants in Los Angeles when this record setting event occurred. Later that season Mr. Koufax and his teammates would become the World Series Champion of 1969. A future Hall of Famer, Mr. Koufax would retire from baseball in 1972 after 30 years in baseball due to arthritis in the elbow.

Actor, Richard Gere is born
Richard Gere, Hollywood actor and leading man was born back in this day in 1949 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This popular actor has starred in films such as “An Officer and a Gentleman” “Pretty Woman.” According t history.com, “Off-screen, Gere became known for for his advocacy work for human rights in Tibet as well as AIDS awareness. The actor was married to the supermodel Cindy Crawford from 1991 to 1995 and since 2002 has been married to the former Law & Order actress Carey Lowell. They have one son, Homer.
