This Day in History – Nov 4th
Back in 1842, a struggling Lawyer from Hodgenville, Kentucky by the name of Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd also from Kentucky. In 19 years in 1861, Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln become the future 16th President and First Lady of the U.S.
Both Abraham and Mary was staunch abolitionist before and after Mr. Lincoln’s Presidential career. Sadly, Mrs. Lincoln witnessed the death of her husband when he was assassinated next to her in a Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C.
Mrs. Lincoln struggled after her husbands’ assignation. According to history.com, “after Lincoln’s death, Mary Todd was forced to petition Congress for a widow's pension. The death of a second son, Tad, in 1871 threw her over the brink into insanity and she was placed in a mental institution by her son Robert. After two attempts at suicide, Mary Todd was released into the custody of her sister Elizabeth. She lived with Elizabeth in Springfield, Illinois (where her husband and son were buried), until her death in 1882 at the age of 63.”

Singer, Anne Murray’s “You Needed Me” goes to #1
Back in 1978 during the Disco Explosion, Pop Artist, Anne Murray scored a #1 hit on the Billboard 100 with her beautiful ballad, “You Needed Me.” Ms. Murray, who was from Nova Scotia, Canada chose to stick with this type of country melody instead of following current trend of fellow singers like Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and Rod Stewart into changing their song choices within the Disco generation. Ms. Murray worked as a Phy-Ed Teacher before embarking on her successful singing career.
According to history.com, “While the highest spot Anne Murray would reach on the pop chart in the years that followed was #12 with her 1980 cover of the Monkees' "Daydream Believer," the success of "You Needed Me" proved to be just the beginning of her chart success as a country star. Between 1979 and 1986, Anne Murray would earn a total of nine #1 hits on the country-music charts, starting with 1979's "I Just Fall In Love Again" and ending with 1986's "Now And Forever (You And Me)." And in 2007, Murray achieved a #1 ranking of a very different kind, being named the top female celebrity golfer in the world by Golf for Women magazine.”
