Future U.S. President, Eisenhower is Born – This Day in History – Oct 14th

Back in 1890, Abilene Texas was the birthplace of future 34th U.S. President, Dwight “Ike,” David Eisenhower.  A West Point graduate back in 1915, Mr. Eisenhower developed a Military career that included the following:

  • Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during WWII
  • Leader of the Normandy invasion in 1944
  • Supreme Commander of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) forces in Europe
  • Five Starred General of the Army

President Eisenhower served two terms in the White House from 1953 to 1961.  According to history.com “The Cold War and a determination to prevent the spread of communism permeated Eisenhower’s foreign and domestic policies.”

Mr. Eisenhower died from heart failure at the age of 78 in 1969. He was married to his wife, Mamie and had two sons, Doud and John.

Dr. Martin Luther King is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Back in 1964, Civil Rights Leader, 35-year-old, Dr. Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent display of racial injustice in America.  Born in Atlanta in 1929, Dr. King would lead marches and protests to help end racial segregation.   Dr. King received a monetary prize with his prize in the amount of $54,000.  This money was donated to the civil rights movement.

 

Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction features All-Star Cast

Back in 1994, writer, Director Quentin Tarantino assembles a All-Star Cast in a pop culture phenomenon movie, “Pulp Fiction.”  The movie had an ensemble cast of the likes of Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Christopher Walken and Ving Rhames. This film won a Best Screenplay Oscar for Tarantino and fellow screenwriter Roger Avary.

One of the famous scenes of this movie is the dance contest performed between Travolta and Thurman characters, “Vincent Vega and Mia Wallace.”

Everly Brothers go to #1 when they, “Wake Up Little Susie"

Back in 1957, the singing duo of brothers, Don and Phil Everly sang a tune that became their first #1 hit called, "Wake Up Little Susie."  Known for their close-harmony style and Appalachia sounds, this duo was influential in the history of rock and roll. 

According to histro.com, “The Everly Brothers would earn 25 top-40 hits over the first five years of their hugely influential recording career, including two more #1s: "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (1958) and "Cathy's Clown" (1960).”
