I’m not a crook,” declares Nixon - This Day in History – Nov 17th

This Day in History – Nov 17th

Back in 1973 president Richard Nixon’s Watergate scandal overshadowed his administration.  During a tense speech held at the Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL he commented to a group of Associated Press editors during a question and answer session and stated that, “I’m not a crook.”  However, Mr. Nixon did take responsibility for his inadequate supervision of his campaign funding methods.

According to history.com, “In Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward's book All the President's Men, Nixon is described at this time as being "a prisoner in his own house—secretive, distrustful... combative, sleepless." Nixon's protestations of innocence with regard to the Watergate cover-up were eventually eroded by a relentless federal investigation.  Richard Nixon resigned on August 8, 1974.”

Kingston Trio makes “Tom Dooley” #1

Back in 1958, a group of three folk music musicians called the Kingston Trio reached #1 with their hit, “Tom Dooley,” which was based on the murder of Laura Foster, who was killed by her fiancée Tom Dula who was sentenced to hang for her death.

According to history.com, “Thanks to extensive coverage in major newspapers like The New York Times, the trial of Mr. Dula made him something of a national cause celebre, and he proclaimed his innocence of the murder even as he stood on the gallows. It is not clear when or by whom the mournful murder ballad based on his story was written, but it was resurrected by the Kingston Trio in the late 1950s after hearing a fellow folk singer perform it in an audition at San Francisco's Purple Onion Club.”
