J.K. Rowling’s First Harry Potter movie debuts - This Day in History – Nov 16th

Back in 2001, one of the highest grossing films in movie history premiered in theaters, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” written by British author, J.K. Rowling.

This move made its three main movie characters wealthy, international stars. According to history.com, “Children and adults alike were captivated by the story of Harry, his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, their adventures at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Harry’s struggles against his main enemy, the evil Lord Voldemort.”

Actress “Mary” Martin makes Broadway debut as “Maria” in “The Sound of Music”

Back in 1959, Broadway premiered the “The Sound of Music,” a play based loosely on ex-nun Maria von Trapp’s book and her life with her husband and her large brood of stepchildren.  This play starred actress Mary Martin as Maria, which on her a Tony award.  Years later this play would star Julie Andrews who would also portray Maria in the popular, classic film version as well.
