This Day in History – Nov 8th

Back in 1960,  Democrat John F. Kennedy won the Presidential election in a narrow victory over Republican Vice President Richard Nixon. Thus JFK became the youngest President to hold the office. 

This was the first presidential campaign that feature televised debates which included foreign policy discussions.  Nixon who was four years older than Kennedy but would state in the debates that Kennedy was too young to handle to responsibilities of being President. 

According to history.com, “Kennedy promised to reinvigorate America's foreign policy, relying on a flexible response to changing situations and exploring options ignored by the staid and conservative Eisenhower administration.”

Lincoln wins a second term in the White House

Back in 1864, Abraham Lincoln was successful in being re-elected and thus began his second tern as the U.S.’s 16th President.  Mr. Lincoln hoped to create a negotiated settlement regarding the Confederacy.  The Civil War was in its fourth year with Confederate General Robert E. Lee battling against Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

According to histort.com, “Perhaps most important was the fact that the election was held at all. Before this, no country had ever held elections during a military emergency. Lincoln himself said, "We can not have free government without elections; and if the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us." Five months after Lincoln's re-election, the collapse of the Confederacy was complete.”
