This Day in History – Sept 4th
Back in 1957, Little Rock, Arkansas faced desegregation laws in their public schools. Angry white citizens surrounded the Central High School to prevent nine African American students from entering the school. Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus, violated a federal order when he demanded the National Guard stop these nine children from integrating the high school.

Kelly Clarkson becomes the first American Idol Winner
Back in 2002, Fox television network developed a show that would showcase unknowns for a singing contest called, “American Idol.” This Reality show became an instant hit and crowned its first winner, 20-year-old Kelly Clarkson, who was working as a cocktail waitress from Texas. Ms. Clarkson beat out Justin Guarini. The winner received a record contract that made Ms. Clarkson millions. The Host, Ryan Seacrest and its 3 judges Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Johnson, became famous celebrities as well. This show is currently in its 10th Season.

Ford Motor Company Unveils its Edsel
Back in 1957, the Ford Motor Company premiered its Edsel. This car was seemed to some as over-hyped, over-designed, over-sized and a victim of bad timing. According to history.com, “thanks to the big impact ring or "horse collar" in the middle of its front grille, it looked (one reporter said) like "a Pontiac pushing a toilet seat." (Another called it "an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon.")”
Frank and Moon Unit Zappa make Satirical “Valley Girl”
Back in 1982, musician, Frank Zappa and his 14-year-old daughter Moon Unit joined forces to make a satirical top 40 hit, titled, “Valley Girl.” This song according to history.com was, “a send-up of the stereotypical mall-dwelling teens of the San Fernando Valley, "Valley Girl" took on a life of its own once loosed into the popular culture. While most may have consumed the song as satire, that didn't stop such Valley vocabulary as "Fer sure," "Ohmigod," "Gag me with a spoon" and "Grody to the max" from spreading like a virus into corners of the world previous untouched by such catchphrases.”
