Louganis wins gold despite head injury - This Day in History – Sept 19th

Back in 1984, American Olympian diver, Greg Louganis won Gold at the Los Angeles Summer games for both the springboard and platform competitions.  Mr. Louganis had now returned again to win gold in the 1988 Seoul, South Korea Summer games.

He would succeed this dream even with a head injury.  The day before Mr. Louganis had sustained this injury by doing an incomplete reverse 2 1/2 somersault pike dive.  However, the next day he gained strength and confidence and nailed each dive, thus winning his second consecutive springboard and platform competitions

Seven years later, Mr. Louganis would confirm that he suffering from the AIDS virus.

Pesci’s Oscar Winning Goodfellas debuts

Back in 1990, the popular mafia movie directed by Martin Scorsese was named “Goodfellas.”  This movie starred Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Lorraine Bracco and Joe Pesci.   New York crime reporter Nicholas Pileggi’s book “Wiseguy,” was based on this film.  This movie would win Pesci his Best supporting Actor Oscar for his role of psychotic mobster, Tommy DeVito.

 

President Garfield dies

Back in 1881, James Abrams Garfield, the 20th President of the U.S. died due to a gunshot wound to the back of the arm from assailant, Charles J. Guiteau.  The President’s wound was a complication of blood poisoning. 

President Garfield succeeded President Garfield.  Mr. Guiteau who was perceived as “Insane,” was convicted of murder and hanged in jail in Washington in 1882.
