Back in 1976, NASA had a ceremony in Palmdale, California to debut their first space shuttle, called Enterprise. This $10 billion vessel took a decade to complete. Furthermore, this was the first space shuttle to glide freely after its release from a Boeing 747. Years later, Rocket boosters would be used to lift the shuttles into orbit.

Williams crowned first black Miss America
Back in 1983, 20-year old New Yorker, Vanessa Williams became the first black Miss America. Ms. Williams' win ended in scandal after pictures surfaced of her posing in the nude. However, this scandal did not deter her from a successful film, Broadway, music and television career.

Oprah’s book club premieres
Back in 1996, television talks show queen, Oprah Winfrey started a book club that launched authors into fame and best sellers. Oprah’s fans followed Ms. Winfrey’s in reading her book choice and discussing this novel on her show or in other groups. The first book that was chosen was Jacquelyn Mitchard’s “The Deep End of the Ocean.”
