Phillies’ Lefty reached his 3,118th strikeout - This Day in History – Sept 21st

Back in 1981, Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitched nicknamed, “Lefty,” strikes out his 3,118th batter,  breaking Bob Gibson’s NL record.  Carlton pitched for 10 shutout innings and had 12 strikeouts. 

Despite Carlton’s strikeout success, the Phillies lost the game to the Montréal Expos in the 17th inning by a score of 1-0.

The War of the Worlds author, H.G. Wells is born 

Back in 1866 the “pioneer of science fiction,” writing, H. G. Wells was born on this day in Bromley, England.  Mr. Wells scientific topics appeared in his novels which were made into well-known Hollywood movies: 

  • The Time Machine
  • The Invisible Man
  • The War of the Worlds

 

According to history.com, “Passionately concerned about the fate of humanity, Wells joined the socialist Fabian Society but quit after a quarrel with George Bernard Shaw, another prominent member.”

Note: H.G. Well’s War of the Worlds novel, would be made into a radio broadcast that would create panic throughout parts of the U.S. in 1938 due to actor Orson Wells reading of a fake alien invasion.
