President Kennedy Issues Executive Orders for Fair housing legislation - This Day in History – Nov 20th

This Day in History – Nov 20th

Back in 1962, the Executive Order 110563 was issued by President John F. Kennedy to approve the fair housing legislation that would end discrimination in housing based on color, creed or national origin.

According to history.com, “Although Kennedy's order was a symbolic landmark for ending de facto segregation in housing, the policy was never enforced. The order left it up to the individual housing and funding agencies to police themselves, leaving much room for non-compliance from state to state. After his assassination in 1963, civil rights activists continued to lobby for integrated neighborhoods. It took Kennedy's successor, Lyndon B. Johnson, until 1968, however, to get a majority of Congress to support a fair housing law.”

Back in 1955, rock-n-roller singer and guitarist, Ellas Otha Bates known to the world as “Bo Diddley,” made his debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.  This musical performance was an introduction to Americans the sound of “Rock and Roll,” before Elvis Presley’s famous performance.  His sound was known as “The Bo Diddley Beat.”

According to history.com, “As Diddley would later tell the story, Ed Sullivan had expected him to perform only a cover version of "Tennessee" Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons" and was furious enough with him for opening with "Bo Diddley" that Sullivan banned him from future appearances on his show.”
