President Lincoln declares an official Thanksgiving Holiday - This Day in History – Oct 3rd

Back in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln announced after the Union Army victory at Gettysburg, an official holiday of Thanksgiving. 

According to historty.com,” In fact, no official Thanksgiving proclamation was issued by any president between 1815 and the day Lincoln took the opportunity to thank the Union Army and God for a shift in the country's fortunes on this day in 1863.”

Woody Guthrie, “The Godfather,” of the 1950’s folk revival, dies

Back in 1967, Woody Guthrie passed away due to Huntington's chorea at the age of 55. 

He was known as the “The Godfather,” of the 1950’s folk revival.  Mr. Guthrie’s was a mentor and inspiration to fellow folk singer, Bob Dylan who called him, “the true voice of the American spirit.”  Mr. Dylan wrote a poem entitled, “Thoughts on Woody Guthrie." 

One of Mr. Guthrie’s best song rendition was, “This Land is Your Land.”

According to history.com, “Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, whom Dylan would later call "the true voice of the American spirit," was a native of Okemah, Oklahoma, who was born in 1912 and thus entered adulthood just as America entered the Great Depression. Already an accomplished, self-taught musician, Woody Guthrie began writing music in earnest following his experiences traveling west to California with other Dust Bowl refugees in the 1930s.”

Hollywood Actor, Clive Owen is born

Back in 1964, Coventry England, welcomed the birth of future Hollywood actor, Clive Owen.  Mr. Owen would have the pleasure of working with Hollywood leading ladies, Halle Berry, Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren.  He is currently in the action drama movie, “Killer Elite,” with Robert DeNiro and Jason Stathan.
