Nancy Kerrigan vs. Tonya Harding
Back in 1994, Olympic Women’s Skating contained a soap opera like scandal between rivals Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. Nancy Kerrigan was attacked at a Detroit ice rink by a man who hit Kerrigan with a club on the back of her knee. After further investigation it was determined that the accuser was associated with Nancy rival, Tonya Harding.
Nancy Kerrigan would make a come back and skate again after seven weeks of intense therapy. According to history.com, “At the Olympics, the competition between Harding and Kerrigan set ratings records. Harding's performance was a drama in itself. She broke down crying after a lace on her skates broke. Even after being allowed a restart, Harding wasn't able to pull herself together and finished eighth. Kerrigan took home the silver medal, and many thought she deserved the gold.”
This rivalry would create the following career moves: Harding’s skating career would diminish and Kerrigan’s would flourish.
