Back in 1947, President Harry Truman delivered his first-ever presidential address, which was televised, from the White House. Mr. Truman’s speech discussed food-conservation due to famine occurring in Europe during World War II.
According to History.com, “He asked farmers and distillers to reduce grain use and requested that the public voluntarily forgo meat on Tuesdays, eggs and poultry on Thursdays and save a slice of bread each day.”

On this day back in 1829, Chester Alan Arthur the future 21st President was born in Fairfield, VT. Mr. Arthur would serve one term in office from 1881 to 1885. He succeeded President James Garfield who was shot and killed by Charles Guiteau, a supposed crazed assassin.
President Arthur was known for an administration of liquor and snobbery. However, some historian stated that his actions were due to the loss of his wife who had died in 1880.
