Hollywood leading lady and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly died on this day back in 1982.  Ms. Kelly was born in Philadelphia and became a movie star due to popular films such as “The Country Girl” and “Rear Window.”  Ms. Kelly gave up her acting career to become the wife of Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

President McKinley is assasinated

Back in 1901, President William McKinley attended a reception at the Pan-American Exhibition in Buffalo, NY.  During this event, Mr. McKinley was be assassinated by Leon Czolgosz who shot the President twice in the chest at close range.

 

Little Richard has “Tutti Frutti”

Back in 1955, flamboyant Richard Wayne Penniman, known to the music industry as “Little Richard,” scored a big hit with his song, “Tutti Frutti.”  Mr. Richard called himself “The Architect of Rock and Roll.”  This song was not only popular with audiences but contained a high-octane fast-paced performance by LIttle Richard.

 

Hurricane Floyd slams the eastern seaboard

Back in 1999, Hurricane Floyd created destruction throughout the Atlantic Ocean and the Eastern Seaboard if the United States.  This menace also forced major evacuations of Florida’s Disney World, NASA’s Cape Canaveral and other nearby towns and caused property damages and flooding. 

According to history.com, “In all, 68 people died from Hurricane Floyd. Out of deference to the destruction it caused, the National Hurricane Center retired the name "Floyd" in the spring of 2000.”
