Mr. Roosevelt spoke sternly into the microphone using the memorable words according to history.com, "Yesterday," the president proclaimed, "December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory."

History.com, also reports that, “Roosevelt's 10-minute speech, ending with an oath-"So help us God"—was greeted in the House by thunderous applause and stamping of feet. Within one hour, the president had his declaration of war, with only one dissenting vote, from a pacifist in the House. FDR signed the declaration at 4:10 p.m., wearing a black armband to symbolize mourning for those lost at Pearl Harbor."

Ex-Beatle, John Lennon killed

Back in 1980, fans of the former British Band, “The Beatles,” mourned the loss of their rhythm guitarist, John Lennon, who was shot to death by Mark David Chapman in New York City.

Chapman had met Lennon hours before taking his life.  According to history.com, “On nearly the same spot some six hours earlier, Lennon had signed his autograph on a copy of his new album, Double Fantasy, for the man who would soon shoot him dead: Mark David Chapman. In his statement to the authorities later that evening, the 25-year-old Chapman, whom police took into custody peaceably after finding him reading a copy of The Catcher in the Rye at the site of the shooting, said, "I'm sure the large part of me is Holden Caulfield, who is the main person in the book. The small part of me must be the Devil."”

On December 14th, a heartfelt tribute and 10-minute silent vigil was attended by close to 100,000 people in New York City’s Central Park to mourn John Lennon’s death.  Chapman was convicted of his crime and sentenced to 20 years to life in prison.
