Back in 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt proposed that the Grand Canyon should become a national monument.  The Arizona landmark was part of the President’s interest in environmental conservation.

History.com states that, “Roosevelt exercised this right to make more than 800,000 acres of the Grand Canyon area into a national monument. "Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is," he declared. "You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is keep it for your children, your children’s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.”

U.N approves Paul Simon’s return to Johannesburg, South Africa

Back in 1992, musician, Paul Simon received the U.N.’s blessing to return to

Johannesburg, South Africa.  Mr. Simon’s previous trip to South Africa angered the U.N officials due to a cultural boycott that was in place to this region.  When the boycott was lifted seven years later, then Mr. Simon was allowed to return.

According to history.com, “It was only appropriate, then, that Paul Simon should be the first major international star to perform in South Africa after the lifting of the U.N. boycott. With the full support of the ANC and its recently freed leader Nelson Mandela, Simon performed before 40,000 cheering fans in Johannesburg's Ellis Park Stadium on this day in 1992.”
