According to history.com, “The Lone Ranger made a seemingly effortless transition from radio to motion pictures and television. The televised version of The Lone Ranger, staring Clayton Moore as the masked man, became ABC's first big hit in the early 1950s. Remaining on the air until 1957, the program helped define the golden age of the TV Western and inspired dozens of imitators like The Range Rider, The Roy Rogers Show, and The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok. Although the Lone Ranger disappeared from American television and movie screens by the 1960s, he lived on in a popular series of comic books well into the 1970s.”

Spiritual Leader of India, Gandhi is assassinated
Back in 1948, the man who advocated the Indian non-violence independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated on this day. This spiritual and political leader was the son of an Indian official who would later become a lawyer. However, he was unable to find legal work and would accept a one-year contract in South Africa. During his stay in Natal, South Africa, Gandhi faced racism and laws that prevented equal rights among Indian laborers.
According to history.com, “This injustice led Gandhi to become a leader of his people when he formed the Natal Indian Congress that bring international attention to the Indian people in South Africa."
“He formed the Natal Indian Congress and drew international attention to the plight of Indians in South Africa. In 1906, the Transvaal government sought to further restrict the rights of Indians, and Gandhi organized his first campaign of satyagraha, or mass civil disobedience. After seven years of protest, he negotiated a compromise agreement with the South African government.”
“In an effort to end India's religious strife, he resorted to fasts and visits to the troubled areas. He was on one such vigil in New Delhi when Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist who objected to Gandhi's tolerance for the Muslims, fatally shot him. Known as Mahatma,or "the great soul," during his lifetime, Gandhi's persuasive methods of civil disobedience influenced leaders of civil rights movements around the world, especially Martin Luther King Jr. in the United States.”
