Back in 1948, the Presidential campaign was between Governor Thomas E. Dewey, of NY and Democratic incumbent, Harry S. Truman. Political Analysts and polls reflected a huge win for Mr. Dewey, so much that the Chicago Tribune pre-printed their early edition with the confident headline, "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN." However, the headline was wrong, Truman won re-election over Dewey.
According to history.com, “Truman, a one-time farmer who was elevated to the pinnacle of American politics because of his reputation for honesty and integrity, won the nation's affection, and he narrowly won a second term.”

Martin Luther king federal holiday approved
Back in 1983 the petition to designate a federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King was declared with the signing of the bill by President Ronald Reagan. This law marked this national holiday to be held the third Monday of January.

According to time magazine, “This is not a black holiday; it is a people's holiday," said Coretta Scott King after President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law on Nov. 2, 1983. But in the complicated history of Martin Luther King, Jr Day, it has only recently been a holiday for all the people, all the time.”
Future 11th President of the U.S, Polk is born
Back in 1795, the future 11th President of the U.S., James Knox Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, NC. This President was known as a workaholic and died from exhaustion within three months of his term in the White House.
According to history.com, “As president, Polk earned a reputation for being a workaholic and is remembered for his conviction that it was America's "manifest destiny" to expand freely across the continent and spread democracy.”
