Why Giving During the Holidays Strengthens Communities

During the holidays, many people give material or financial assistance to individuals and families that are less fortunate. This is the most obvious benefit to giving during the holidays, but there are also some long term benefits for the community as a whole. In this article we will go over what those benefits are.

Social Relationships

When a community is rallying around a cause, naturally this creates a sense of belonging. With this newfound sense belonging, relationships between neighbors become strong. All it takes is one commonality for human beings of different races, religions, and political beliefs to put their guards down and work as a team to accomplish the goal of giving.

Children Learn

From an early age, if the act of giving is taught by parents and the community at large, children will be more inclined to give when they grow up to be adults. Consequently, this positive behavior will be passed from generation to generation.

Compassion

The more people in a community get involved in charitable giving, the more compassion and understanding they will have for families that are less fortunate. Community members often have preconceived views of certain populations without truly understanding their back stories. Interacting with them will lead to greater understanding.
