“Avery is a go-getter, exhibiting stamina in pursuing and reporting stories and consistently meeting deadlines,” Gregory said.
Being the Pennsylvania scholarship winner, Maslowsky moved onto the National JEA SJOY competition along with other state winners, April 25 through April 27 at the National High School Journalism Convention in Anaheim, California.
Maslowsky was named a national runner-up and received an $850 Sister Rita Jeanne Abicht Scholarship.
"In just four years, I’ve completely transformed as a result of student journalism," Maslowsky said. "I’ve grown more confident in not just my reporting, but also in myself. Student journalism is so much bigger than just words on a page, it’s the power to say what needs to be said and the courage to say it when others won’t. I’m honored to be a part of that cause and to be named the 2019 Pennsylvania Student Journalist of the Year."
