Exelon Wants Us To Bail Out Their Nuclear Plants

Contact your Representative and Senator in Harrisburg and demand NO BAILOUT for Exelon!

I stand with the 84 percent of Pennsylvanians who oppose a ratepayer-funded bailout of the nuclear industry.

As a Pennsylvania taxpayer, I work hard for every dollar that goes into my pocket. The nuclear bailout threatens to drive up my energy bills just so nuclear corporations can continue to make millions of dollars in profits.

As we have seen in New York and Illinois, large energy consumers such as schools, hospitals, transit systems, manufacturers and small businesses are paying more for electricity, and those costs likely will be passed on to consumers.

Deregulation, electric choice and market-driven electric prices are working — and we the ratepayers are benefiting.

While the nuclear industry has gone to the federal government and several states for intervention, the struggles of the nuclear industry are a direct result of its failure to adapt to changing market conditions after the industry already received nearly $9 billion from ratepayers for the purpose of transitioning to a competitive electricity market in Pennsylvania.

The nuclear industry once praised competitive electricity markets when it was making record profits. Now that market conditions have changed and profits have declined, it is back at the door demanding another ratepayer-funded bailout. Enough is enough!

It is not the role of government to pick winners and losers — especially when multibillion-dollar corporations are the winners and the ratepayers of Pennsylvania are the losers. We should not have to take on the burden of higher electricity prices because the nuclear industry has made bad business decisions.

I stand with the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvanians who oppose a nuclear bailout. As my representative in Harrisburg, please advocate for continued consumer choice on behalf of the citizens of Pennsylvania by opposing any legislative effort to undermine competitive energy markets, including a ratepayer-funded nuclear bailout.
