To all Camera Promoters and Innocent Motorists in Pernnsylvania:
If logic decided policy in Harrisburg, state spending would be low, the budget would be balanced, the benefits of regulations would exceed the costs, and policymakers would guard against unintended consequences. Unfortunately, the Pennsylvania government is largely impervious to logic, and the tragic results are obvious for all to see. Nowhere has this been more destructive than in the area of highway safety.
Consequences are the truest test of any policy. In Philadelphia, and around the world, speed cameras and red light cameras increase accidents, injuries and deaths. So Senate Bill 172 is a failure before it's passed. Yet the Legislature charges on because of all the money to be harvested from motorists. I mean tens of millions of dollars flowing into camera boosters' pockets.

The Pennsylvania Legislature could learn a thing or two from South Dakota:
South Dakota House Near Unanimous On Photo Ticketing Ban South Dakota House votes 69-1 in favor of prohibiting speed and red light cameras. http://thenewspaper.com/rlc/news.asp?ID=4329&m=print
"Red light cameras are not the most effective way of reducing red light violations," South Dakota State Representative Peggy Gibson (D-Huron) said. "Red light cameras are used primarily used to raise money and not improve safety. Ticket recipients are not notified quickly out of the offense, and there's no guarantee of delivery of the citation because it goes through US mail. There is no certifiable witness to the supposed violation."
Most of the time Harrisburg is far better at hurting than helping its citizens.

Stop SB 172, and ban photo traffic enforcement in Pennsylvania. 2018 is an election year.
Sincerely,
