Local Students Build Computers At Tech Build Camp

DEVON, PA – More than a dozen Devon Preparatory middle and high school students took time out of their summer vacations to get a lesson in tech, as they worked to build computers for the school's new Visual Studio lab.

The boys attended a week-long Tech Build Camp where they learned how to build computers – and successfully built computers – that will be used in the school's new studio.

Under the direction of technology teacher Dave Woodward, the boys learned all about how a computer works, how to put it all together, and how to troubleshoot the device if something doesn’t work properly. The students built 15 computers that will become the basis of the new lab.

The final assembled computers had software installed and were connected to the campus network. When all was done, the students gave names to their finished products, such as Riley, Computer Mccomputer-Face, and Captain_Crunch.

“The main purpose of the camp was to demystify what is inside a computer,” Woodward said. “Too often students focus on software. I wanted the kids to see what happens inside the box, as well as how easy and inexpensive it is to build and upgrade your own machine.”

According to several of the boys, learning how to build the machine was interesting and even exciting when they actually worked. But the most fun came when the work was done and they were able to play games on them.

The lab will be located in the newly renovated high school building which will be completed for the first day of school in September.

Devon Prep will host a Fall Open House on Sunday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where you can learn more about the new lab and the school.
