TREDYFFRIN, PA — A man is in custody after fatally shooting a woman in a random attack this past weekend in Tredyffrin, authorities said Monday.

Steve Jahn, 44, has been charged with murder and related offenses.

Police were dispatched to 809 Contention Ln. at 10:47 p.m. Saturday for a car crash. At the scene, they found a woman who had been shot, said Chester County District Attorney Chris de Barrena-Sarobe.

Jahn, who is listed as homeless, was arrested that night and is detained at the Chester County Prison, according to court records. He was charged with criminal homicide, first- and third-degree murder, and weapons offenses.

"This was a random act of violence in our community," Barrena-Sarobe said. "And it's just been an unspeakable tragedy that our detectives have worked around the clock to solve."

Jahn acted alone, Barrena-Sarobe said. He and the victim don't appear to have any pre-existing connection.

The victim crashed into a pole after she was shot, Barrena-Sarobe said.

It's unclear what motivated the alleged attack.

"I just want to emphasize that the community is safe," Barrena-Sarobe said.

The Chester County District Attorney's Office and Tredyffrin police are investigating the incident.

Jahn was denied bail as he awaits a preliminary hearing, scheduled for March 23.

He did not have an attorney listed in online court records.
