UPPER MERION, PA -- Sinkhole-related pavement damage caused a closure of a section of Route 23 on Friday afternoon. The closure could last through the weekend, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.
Route 23 was closed between B Street and McCoys Lane in Upper Merion Township.
During the road closure, northbound Route 23 through traffic is detoured over Route 320 (Swedeland Road), South Gulph Road, Henderson Road, U.S. 202 North (DeKalb Street) and Ford Street. Southbound Route 23 (E. 4th Street/Schuylkill River Road) drivers are detoured over Ford Street, U.S. 202 South, Henderson Road, South Gulph Road and Route 320 (Swedeland Road).

Motorists are advised to allow additional time for travel during this road closure.
Suncap Property Group LLC recently widened this area of Route 23 and installed a high volume driveway for a new business development being built along Route 23.

This work was performed under a PennDOT Highway Occupancy Permit. The contractor, Allan A. Myers, LP of Worcester, will work this weekend to fill the underground void and repair the damaged pavement.
Route 23 will reopen at the completion of construction, which is expected to last the better part of the weekend, weather permitting.
