I set out for brunch at Winberie’s this past weekend. Their lauded brunch buffet had caught my attention. I pulled up to the historic property with the excitement of breakfast sausages already firmly planted in my mind.

My friend arrived ahead of me and was already posted up at the bar, sipping a mimosa. From the bar area, you have a great view of the breakfast spread; a dozen metal warming dishes lined the wall, each hiding its brunch-y contents beneath its heavy, round lids.
We made our way over to our table, and were greeted by a friendly and gracious server who started us with coffee and water. A choice of a Bloody Mary or a Mimosa was included in the $20 brunch price, a very nice way to make a gal feel welcome. I went with the mimosa.

Our first pass on the buffet revealed a wonderful assortment of breakfast items and I may have had one of each. I made a b-line for the Belgian waffles. Cut into quarters, the fluffy triangles were the perfect portion. I topped mine with blueberry and syrup, which were warming on the buffet.
I then made my way down the line; sausage links, bacon, hashbrowns, Eggs Benedict, some cheese cubes and grapes. On my way back to the table, I also grabbed a banana nut muffin. The sausage links which I had been hoping were patties, because I feel patties are underutilized, were delicious nonetheless as was the crispy bacon.
The hash browns were a nice variation with thin crisps of potato, still meaty enough, but almost chip like, mixed with peppers that were perfectly cooked, while still keeping their crisp integrity.
The Eggs Benedict was very nice as well. The egg was still soft, and the hollandaise was still intact. For being preassembled and awaiting my selection in a hot plate, it was surprisingly good, though I do prefer a crispier English Muffin.
My friend opted for the omelet station, which offered eggs or egg-whites, tomatoes, peppers, onions, bacon, ham, mushrooms and cheese.
There was a carving station with ham and roast beef, as well as a lox, pastry and dessert station.
I finished up my first plate and moved onto the lunch portion of the buffet. A scoop of this and a few of those and suddenly, I had an ominous plate before me. There was a tortellini, a pasta rosa, fried pierogies, veggie lasagna, prime rib, chicken marsala and shrimp.
The tortellini and fried pierogi were good, but nothing to write home about. My friend was very happy with the veggie lasagna. And I was pretty impressed with prime rib; cubed and served with a wild rice. Though the rice was a little dry, the brown gravy from the steak made it all ok.
The chicken marsala had a good flavor, and was served with julienned vegetables, which were again, nicely cooked, while keeping their crunch. There’s nothing worse than a soggy overcooked and or raw vegetable, and Winberie’s has seemed to have perfected the art of the “side of veg.”
The one sour moment in all of my meal was a waft of low tide and a flavor to match during my experience with a shrimp. He spent his final moments in a napkin.
Overall, I was much more thoroughly impressed with the breakfast selections, but for varieties sake, the lunch items were nice as well. The price is right, especially when including a complimentary first beverage, and the ambiance was perfectly comfortable for a Sunday morning.
