Second Tredyffrin Mosquito Sample Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

Another mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile Virus in Tredyffrin, the second in the township in as many days.

TREDYFFRIN, PA — Another mosquito sample has tested positive for West Nile Virus in Tredyffrin, the second in the township in as many days.

It was among eight samples which tested positive on Wednesday across Pennsylvania, the PA West Nile Control Program announced.

A positive test was also collected in the township on Tuesday. These are the first two samples which have tested positive for the virus in Chester County so far this year.

In 2015, West Nile was a serious enough concern that chemical sprayings took place in several local municipalities, including Phoenixville and Horsham.

  • Adams - Berwick Twp
  • Allegheny - Pittsburgh City (3)
  • Berks - Leesport Boro
  • Chester - Tredyffrin Twp
  • Lehigh - Salisbury Twp
  • York - Hanover Boro

Officials said Wednesday that WNV staff are responding with additional surveillance and control as needed.

No sprayings had been announced as of Wednesday afternoon.

The risk of being infected with West Nile from a mosquito is very low, officials said, but residents are still urged to take simple precautions, like using repellent and removing standing water from their property.

West Nile Virus typically causes fever but can lead to neurological illness in extremely rare cases.
