Press Release:

In a vain attempt to make RADAR/LIDAR and speed cameras acceptable to the public, special interests staged a dog and pony show at a House Transportation Committee meeting on April 4th.

Drivers, you know that enforcing underposted speed limits is a scam cooked up to fleece safe drivers, hiding behind the plea for “safety.” To get your money.

Harvesting tens of millions of dollars from drivers is the motivation behind Speed Trap Bill SB 251 and Speed Trap Bill SB 172. By cherry picking statistics and the outright skewing of statistics, special interests manufacture a totally inaccurate picture of the roads being a slaughterhouse of speeding maniac drivers.

There is no crisis of “speeding.” PennDOT has christened Pennsylvania Roads as the safest they have ever been. A study conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation says that the number of accidents that were caused by speeding is actually 2.2%. A scientific Penn State Instructor Blog concludes “…driving [at the 85th Percentile Speed] is actually safer. Drivers usually drive to the speed they feel safe in, regardless of the [posted] speed limit, so…states should raise speed limits to reasonable speeds, in consideration that only 2.2% [NHTSA stat.] of all fatal accidents are because of speed.” https://sites.psu.edu/siowfa15/2015/09/18/is-driving-faster-safer/

“Reasonable speeds” means setting limits at the safest speed using the proper highway engineering principle of the 85th Percentile Speed. When the limits are so set, there is little need for speed enforcement, especially with expensive speed cameras and RADAR/LIDAR.

The House Transportation Committee must stop listening to the special interests and those who profit from traffic enforcement and give taxpaying drivers real safety on the roads by posting limits at the safest speed.

Drivers, tell your Representative and Senator to VOTE NO on Speed Trap Bill SB 251 and Speed Trap Bill SB 172 in this election year. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tom McCarey
