On many weekends throughout the year, sports fields in Chester County are filled with young people (and sometimes not-so-young people) playing team sports like football, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, field hockey, rugby and even ultimate Frisbee. Often, larger sports complexes host extensive weekend tournaments that attract thousands of players – and their families – to Chester County.
The benefits of all this physical exercise, fresh air and team play are significant. But so, too, is the economic impact. When thousands of players, families and friends come to town, then hotels, restaurants, retailers and tourist attractions see a great increase in revenue.
Next week will be no exception. Chester County has been selected, once again, to host the 2013 Continental Youth Championships – a four day youth Gaelic games event that welcomes teams from throughout the United States and Canada, with up to 2,000 participants, representing around 150 teams. In fact, it is the largest youth Gaelic games tournament run outside of Ireland.

Not only are we privileged to have the facilities to host events such as this, but we are also grateful to the Continental Youth Championship tournament’s host committee, the sponsors and the volunteers, who, along with the Chester County Conference and Visitors Bureau, ensure that hotels are booked, parking and transportation are secured, and restaurants and shops are ready to welcome the expected 4,000 visitors.
The Continental Youth Championships will be held from July 25th to July 28th, in Malvern, and a parade of all the teams will take place in West Chester on Wednesday, July 24th. For more information, go to www.cycgaa.org.
