During the shavasana portion of my flow yoga class at SSP Yoga, I had an aha! moment. Suddenly it clicked and everything made sense. Breathing is not only vital to being, but to ground oneself: mentally bonding oneself to the ground & releasing all that holds us back.
It's this grounding...and the commitment to knowing that we are free to fly, that the ground will still be underneath us...that allows oneself to let go and soar. The same comparison can be made to religion: when we have faith in something bigger than us, we are free to truly be who we are meant to be.
I used to practice yoga back in the day but I never understood its spiritual prowess. At that time, my mind would incessantly race & I could never settle. So I left and chose more "active" fitness (ie. hip-hop, kickboxing, running). My goal at that time was have the best body & hope my mind could keep up. Fast forward a decade and the focus is mind over body. Only when your mind is at peace can your body follow form.

Quite often I go through poses and am in absolute amazement of what my body is able to do through the power of suggestion. For example, when the instructor says, "move your pinky toe" and it actually moves/the whole body realigns itself...well, that is unbelievable to me. The internal power we yield is awesome...if we just quiet the mind and have awareness and intention.
You see, it's all about intention. You can't move forward & grow in life with an unclear focus. You'll end up on a twisted path or not move at all. Look around at the people that surround you...most wander aimlessly, numbingly, through the world. Now think about your own being. When you wake, how do you address the miraculous day ahead of you? What is your intention of being today? If you don't have a plan, how can you get to where you need to go?

It's a slow process...shedding the unnecessary layers to get to the core: of our body and of life. Don't ever be afraid to rid yourself of the things--and/or people--that no longer serve you. It's quality rather than quantity...the more of anything we surround ourselves with, the more clutter & noise that fails to provide a life of meaning. Less is more. And it's only in silence when we hear the answers.
I call this Intentional Grounding: Taking time each day to set your intentions. It's okay to have doubts...eventually they, too, will shed away to a more certain path. It's only when we allow ourselves the ability to breathe and be can our life take on true purpose.
Please note that I will be co-hosting a Summer Series with Stacey Skilton-Pitz at her SSP Yoga Studio in Ft. Washington...each week a theme will be chosen to practice in pose/yoga, followed by a meaningful discussion over wine. More info to come.
