Cardinal Sports Wrap for Sept. 8, 2011

The boys soccer team and girls field hockey team picked up impressive wins over SOL competition.

Soccer

The Upper Dublin boys soccer team took down conference rival Cheltenham with three goals in the first half and two in the second to open the 2011 conference season with a 5-0 win. All the team needed was Brian Schaefer’s 26th minute strike to end up 1-0-1 (1-0 SOL American).

The Cardinals also had goals from Dan Demchick, Drew Yekel, John Roos and Zach Arnold. Demchick and Yekel had two points on the night, as they both assisted each other’s goals. UD’s starting goalkeeper Parker Schroeder only needed one save as Scott Wexler came in to make a save later in the game as well. Upper Dublin now prepares for Upper Marion for an afternoon tilt on Friday.

Field Hockey

Emily Hitchings scored twice within two mintues to help the Lady Flying Cardinals (2-0, 1-0 SOL American) post a 5-0 shutout of Cheltenham. Kelly Cross notched two points herself with a goal and an assist, while Marie Wheatley rounded out scoring in the first half with a goal. Upper Dublin was up 4-0 at halftime, leaving the team's conference rivals puzzled.

Alycia Hildebrand scored with an assist via Lily Morreale late in the second half to finally end the Panthers' misery. Goalies Dana Russell (first half) and Julia McKernan (second half) tag teamed for the shutout, but didn’t have any work as the Cardinal defense didn’t let up a shot all game. The Cardinals look to stay perfect Friday when they visit Upper Merion.
