This establishment is a wonderful addition to the overcrowded sushi restaurant scene in Montgomery County. Umami Umami occupies the former Dresher Inn and is located just off the Dresher triangle.
The exterior of the building has remained mostly untouched but the interior has seen major changes. The sushi bar is located directly opposite the front door and you can expect a warm welcome from the sushi chef's as you enter. The waiting area has high ceilings that are highlighted by a grand chandelier. Dark wood lines the large stairs that are flanked by fresh flowers. As you make it up to the large dining area there's several tables and plenty of room to relax.
After perusing the large menu I settled on the Sushi & Sashimi combo ($40). The combo came with 5 pieces of sushi, 8 pieces of sashimi, soup & salad. The miso soup was average & the salad wasn't much better. I love ginger dressing but their dressing was very thick and bland.
The combo platter was ascetically pleasing and tasted even better! The sashimi pieces were cut to normal length but were much thicker than most other places in the area. The fish was the perfect temperature and extremely fresh. Along with the combo you get a tuna roll. The roll was tasty but Extremely small. Overall I gave my meal a solid B+.
My friend ordered the Salmon Tower( $17). The tower is constructed of rice, crab meat, avocado & Salmon. It comes out as the name states in a "tower" or large cylinder. The plate is adorned with several brightly colored sauces. This meal is very filling.
My opinion of all sushi restaurants is based mostly on their sashimi. Don't get me wrong I love a good roll but its too easy to mask the fish with spicy mayo or other ingredients. Umami's sashimi is as good as any I've had locally.
Sushi is pricey by nature but I feel that this restaurant is priced a bit higher then it should be. Umai in Lansdale is still the best in the area but Umami isn't too far behind them.
