It's summer...
School is out...
Time to relax..
There are countless lists of tips and ideas for helping students keep sharp over the summer. Schools often supply reading lists and math packets and other tools to help students avoid drop off, and prepare for the upcoming year.
Here is a simple list of ideas that may be new or different:
1. analyze...
what worked and didn't work for the past year. What do you need to do more of? less of? What areas do you need to strengthen?
2. be realistic
the summer is a great time to read and enrich vocabulary without the pressures of deadlines and occur during the school year.. but it is also an excellent time to plug holes in areas that are more detailed like Math and the Sciences or Test Prep areas (like SAT / PSAT and ACT.. more below)
3. Look ahead
What are you going to have in the fall that may be problematic? Use the summer to get a jump on these topics. For example, if Algebra isn't your forte.. then likely you'll have some issues in Math based science courses like Chemistry and Physics.
4. Think Broadly
High school students can use the summer to gain experience that will help with college admissions and beyond. Consider taking a class over the summer, or volunteering. These things 'pad' your college application, but they also help to sort out your interests.
5. Test Prep
For rising Juniors especially, the summer is a fine time to start on test prep for SAT, PSAT and ACTs...
