Summer Enrichment Classes for Young Readers and Writers

Have a child interested in reading and writing? There's plenty of enrichment opportunities.

If your child has a passion for reading or writing, and you are looking for a summer program that will provide enrichment in these areas, then I suggest you check out the 2011 Young Writers/Young Readers camp, sponsored by The Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project.

The classes provided through this program are taught by experienced, professional teachers. The small class sizes of about 13 to 15 students will ensure that your child gets the support he or she needs to grow as a young reader and writer.

The children are grouped by age and grade level, and classes are available for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Camp sessions are either one or two weeks long, depending on the class your child signs up for. Two-week classes are $275 and are held at West Chester University. One-week classes vary from $190 to $240, depending on the location. Some of the programs take place in local school districts, while others are held at special locations, including Longwood Gardens or the Highlands Mansion and Gardens.

In the Young Writers/Young Readers class, appropriate for children in grades K to five, your child would learn writing strategies appropriate for his or her grade level. Children would also learn to compose and edit their own writing, as well as share their work with fellow campers. Quality literature is also incorporated into this class.

If your child has completed first or second grade, he or she may be interested in the Meet Me in the Treehouse class. This class is held at Longwood Gardens, where students will draw upon the treehouse exhibit for inspiration in their writing.

If your child enjoys singing, dancing and music, he or she might want to sign up for the Reading and Writing in the Arts program, which encourages children to explore writing through art and song.

There are many classes available for elementary children in grades three to six.  The classes range from nature journaling and storytelling to history and insect exploration. There are so many classes to choose from that every child is sure to find at least one program that appeals to his or her interests.

Programs are still available for the months of July and August, so visit www.pawlp.org to register your child.
