Township Proclaims Days of Remembrance for Holocaust Victims

Set dates as April 15-22.

Upper Dublin Township has joined the list of state and municipal governments that will recognize April 15-22, 2012 as Days of Remembrance for Holocaust victims and survivors.

The annual memorial began in the early 1980's and revolves around the Jewish observance of Yom Hashoah, a day set aside to remember the six million victims of Nazi tyranny. This year, Yom Hashoah falls on Thursday, April 19, with Days of Remembrance stretching from Sunday to Sunday. The days historically coincide with the liberation of the concentration camps in April of 1945.

The commissioners passed a proclamation to recognize the memorial, of which the final paragraph reads:

"Ira S. Tackel, President, with the unanimous support of the Board of Commissioners... do hereby proclaim the week of Sunday, April 15 through Sunday, April 22, 2012, as Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of Upper Dublin Township, should work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs."

Each year, the Days of Remembrance are commemorated at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., with a gathering of religious, civic and political leaders, as well as at smaller ceremonies and services throughout the country.
