Are You At Risk For Falling?

Balance is our Sixth Sense! Our balance naturally declines with age, however simple balance exercises can help increase our balance function

If you think you are at risk for falling, ask yourself the following questions:

• Are you unsteady while you are walking outside on uneven surfaces or even in your own home?

• Are you having trouble standing up from a sitting position?

• Have you had one or more falls in the past year?

• Are you taking multiple heart medications and feel dizzy?

• Do you have pain, numbness, or tingling in your feet?

• Are you experiencing vertigo? (sensation of the room or yourself spinning)

• Are you afraid of falling?

• Do you have trouble balancing on one leg?

• Do you hold onto furniture to walk?

• Are you unsteady in the shower with your eyes closed while washing your hair?

If you answered yes to one or more of the above, You may want to discuss this further with your physician. A physical therapist will be able to perform a comprehensive evaluation to assess your balance. This will include a specific assessment of your fall risk and a balance screen, timed walking testand reaching outside your base of support.
